Though massage brings many benefits to the person receiving it, this comes at a physical cost to the massage therapist, especially with deep tissue massage. Massage therapist's commonly experience chronic physical strain and discomfort, developing joint related issues mainly in the upper body from the hands and wrists to the shoulders, neck, and back.

The average career of a massage therapist is only 4-6 years. Massage is a VERY physically demanding career with 50% of massage therapists only working part-time. If more worked full time it’s likely that would shorten the average career length even more.
